₹2,400 Cr Bridge Collapses 6 Months After Inauguration — CJP Investigation
On the morning of May 14th, 2026, residents of Bhagalpur, Bihar woke up to a sound they'll never forget — a ₹2,400 crore bridge, inaugurated with great fanfare by the state government barely 6 months ago, collapsed into the Ganga river. Miraculously, no casualties were reported as the bridge fell during early morning hours when traffic was minimal.
The Promise vs. The Reality
The bridge was inaugurated on November 15, 2025, with the Chief Minister cutting the ribbon and calling it a "symbol of New Bihar's development." Television cameras captured the celebration. Social media was flooded with praise. The government ran full-page newspaper ads calling it an "engineering marvel."
Six months later, that "engineering marvel" is sitting at the bottom of the river.
Following the Money
CJP's investigation reveals a troubling pattern:
- The construction contract was awarded to Shri Vishwakarma Infrastructure Pvt. Ltd., a company with just 3 years of existence and no prior experience in bridge construction.
- Company records show a ₹50 lakh donation to the ruling party's election fund — made just 2 weeks before the tender was awarded.
- The company underbid the next competitor by 40%, raising questions about how they planned to deliver quality work at such a reduced cost.
- Three government engineers who raised concerns about material quality during construction were transferred to remote postings within weeks of filing their reports.
What the Engineers Said
Speaking to CJP on condition of anonymity, one of the transferred engineers revealed: "The steel rods being used were substandard — anyone with basic civil engineering knowledge could tell. When we flagged it, we were told to sign off or face consequences. Two of us were transferred within a week."
The Human Cost
While no lives were lost in the collapse, the bridge was the primary connection for 47 villages to the nearest hospital, schools, and markets. Thousands of families are now stranded, forced to use boats during monsoon season — a life-threatening alternative.
"My daughter has to cross the river by boat now to go to school," says Ramesh Kumar, a farmer from Naugachhia. "One bridge collapse has taken us back 20 years."
Government Response
The state government has announced an "inquiry committee" to investigate the collapse — headed by the same department that approved the original construction. The contractor has been asked to "rebuild" the bridge at their own cost, with no criminal charges filed.
CJP will continue to follow this story. Because ₹2,400 crore of public money doesn't just "collapse" — someone makes it collapse.
"In India, bridges collapse, but the politicians who built them always remain standing." — CJP Editorial
